So you are planning on bringing home a KahaliCats Kitten…

FAQs

Placement & Approval Policy

Do you approve all homes?
No. All homes are subject to approval.

While we are happy to work with families interested in a KahaliCats Abyssinian or Somali, each kitten is an individual with their own temperament, energy level, and needs. These are living beings—not products—and their well-being is always our highest priority.

For this reason, KahaliCats reserves the right to refuse placement or service at any time, for any reason. This ensures every kitten is matched with a home where they can truly thrive and that our standards of care, responsibility, and ethical breeding practices are upheld.

Our goal is to ensure that you fully understand and are comfortable with our policies before beginning the process.

When is the contract signed?

Contracts are signed at the time of kitten transfer, not before. We do not accept signed contracts in advance.

Can I request changes to the contract?

No. The contract is written as-is to protect both parties — the buyer and the seller — and reflects years of experience and consideration. We do not accept requests for modifications.

Please be aware that the contract is subject to change at any time, so always be sure to read the most current version before reserving a kitten.

Please click HERE review the KITTEN contract.

Health & Policies

Do you genetically test your cats?

We use Optimal Selection for genetic testing, which makes it simple to share our cats’ results with you directly through their online profiles. This provides full transparency to you as a buyer. Optimal Selection screens for over 50 genetic disorders, as well as traits such as blood type and coat color — giving us a much broader understanding of each cat’s genetic makeup beyond the standard breed panel. You can view the full list of what is tested for through the link below, and all test results will also be linked on each cat’s page.

Optimal Selection™ Feline (optimal-selection.com)

Can we come over and pick out our own kitten?

Can we come see your cattery?

We operate as a closed cattery to prioritize the health and well-being of our cats and kittens. Allowing visitors into our home increases the risk of introducing illnesses and infections, which can be especially dangerous for mothers with young litters.

Additionally, unfamiliar guests can cause stress for our cats, impacting their health and development. Since our cattery is based in our private residence, keeping it, closed helps maintain a safe, calm environment for our pets—who are family to us first and foremost.

We understand that meeting your future kitten is important, so we gladly offer photos, videos, and virtual visits to help you get to know our cats and their environment safely.

Can I bring my kitten home without being fixed if I promise to get them fixed later?

No — unless there are rare, unforeseen circumstances, all kittens are altered before leaving.

Why We Do This

We choose early spay/neuter because it allows us to closely monitor each kitten during recovery in the environment they know best. Having raised them from birth, we understand their individual personalities, routines, and normal behaviors, which makes even subtle changes easy to spot. Kittens generally handle surgery exceptionally well, often returning to play the same day and healing quickly and smoothly.

By comparison, adult cats typically experience more post-operative discomfort, a higher risk of complications, and a longer recovery period. Completing the procedure before kittens leave our care ensures they receive attentive observation during those critical first hours and days, with any concerns addressed immediately. It also means families can focus on enjoying their new companion without the stress, responsibility, or added expense of scheduling surgery later.

Another major benefit: spay/neuter guarantees your kitten has had at least one thorough veterinary examination. Veterinarians will not proceed with surgery if a kitten shows signs of serious health issues. This acts as a safeguard, ensuring that only healthy kittens undergo the procedure.

Why Ethical Breeders Support ESN
Today, almost all ethical breeders across breeds are choosing early spay/neuter because the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Benefits of Early Spay/Neuter (ESN):

  • Faster Surgery & Recovery: Kittens have less fat, making surgery shorter with minimal bleeding. They require less anesthesia and recover much more quickly.

  • Reduced Cancer Risk: ESN nearly eliminates the risk of reproductive cancers such as mammary and testicular tumors, and prevents life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra).

  • Lower Disease Incidence: Reduces spread of FeLV and FIV, which can be transmitted through mating or fighting.

  • Better Behavior: Minimizes spraying, yowling, and aggressive behaviors linked to mating.

  • Prevents Early Pregnancy: Females can go into heat or become pregnant as young as 4–6 months, while males can begin spraying around 6 months

For more information on ESN (Early Spay Neuter) visit The "Fix by Five" Initiative.

I am interested in breeding, will you

mentor/co-own/sell me a cat with breeding rights?

At this time we are unable to sell to any breeders due to contract restrictions with our male. So any kittens born in our cattery now will only be able to be sold as Pets. If we get a different male in the future without restrictions, then we are open to working with established breeders with similar goals and policies to ours.

Reserving

Reserving Your Kitten

Can I be placed on your waiting list?

Unfortunately we do not have a waiting list.

When the litter is ready for deposits, it will be a first come first serve basis to approved homes.

Only exception to this is for breeders or previous buyers.

When can I place a deposit for a kitten?

We prefer to allow kittens to get through their first few weeks of life before accepting deposits. This early period is important for monitoring growth, development, and overall health. In most cases, we begin taking deposits when kittens are around one month of age.

If a particular litter is one we are considering retaining kittens from for our program, deposits for that litter may open at a later time. This approach allows us to make thoughtful, well-informed decisions while ensuring the best outcome for both the kittens and their future families.

How do I pay for my kitten/cat?

  • Canadians: eTransfer

  • Americans: Venmo, PayPal, or Western Union

What are the payment and delivery policies for kittens?

  • If our courier arrives and payment has not been completed, they are instructed to return home with the kitten. In this case, your deposit will be applied toward courier travel fees.

  • Courier by plane:

    • Full payment is due one week before the flight.

    • Flight costs are non-refundable once booked and must be paid in full before scheduling.

  • At delivery:

    • Please be prepared to pay courier/driver fees in cash or money order at the time of delivery.

Going Home

When can I bring my kitten home?

Per registration club by-laws, no kitten may leave for their new home before 12 weeks of age. This is the absolute minimum. However, the actual go-home date varies based on the individual kitten’s development and readiness.

Several factors are considered before determining when a kitten is ready to leave, including:

Factors we consider include:

Age and weight: Kittens must reach an appropriate weight to be safely spayed or neutered. Smaller kittens may require additional time to reach this milestone.

Eating independently: Kittens must be consistently eating solid food on their own.

Surgical recovery:

  • Males typically go home a few days after neutering, provided there are no complications.

  • Females generally require about one week of recovery following spay surgery before going home.

For comparison, adult cats take longer to heal. Females often require 1–2 weeks, while males may need 2–4 weeks if spraying behaviors are present.

Average go-home age: Most kittens are ready to go to their new homes around 16–18 weeks of age.

A kitten will never be sent home before they are ready—physically, mentally, or emotionally. Go-home timing is determined at our discretion, in consultation with our veterinarian, and based on the individual kitten’s progress. For this reason, an exact go-home date cannot be guaranteed early on, but families will be kept updated as their kitten grows and develops.

🐾 What should I know about courier deliveries and timing?

We understand how excited you are to welcome your new family member home! Please remember that our courier service providers are individuals doing us a favor to safely and calmly transport your kitten. Most deliveries involve long round trips (8–16 hours) and couriers often have work commitments early the next day. We kindly ask that you treat our couriers with patience and respect.

Important delivery considerations:

  • Safety first: Neither we nor our couriers will travel in unsafe weather conditions — no exceptions.

  • Flight delays: Flight cancellations are beyond our control and may affect delivery timing.

  • Delivery timing: Typically, once your kitten is ready to leave, delivery takes about 1–2 weeks, but this is not guaranteed. Unforeseen delays may occur.

  • Deposits: Please acknowledge that if you require courier delivery, deposits for such services are non-refundable due to wait times, and no discounts will be offered for delays.

  • Faster options: If you need your kitten sooner, we recommend booking a flight to Calgary or Edmonton Airport for pickup.

🐾 Courier Etiquette

Our couriers are individuals who transport kittens as a labor of love, often making long round trips of 8–16 hours. We ask that families treat them with patience and respect.

Harassment will not be tolerated. If it occurs at any time, we reserve the right to terminate the sale without warning.
